Samsung Electronics reported preliminary third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday that rewrote the record books for global big tech: consolidated revenue of 195 trillion won and operating profit of 107.4 trillion won. It is the first time any South Korean company has cleared 100 trillion won of quarterly operating profit.

The numbers are staggering in almost every dimension. Operating profit surged about 783 percent from the 12.17 trillion won reported in the third quarter of 2025. Revenue rose roughly 127 percent year on year. The quarterly operating margin hit 55.1 percent, a level of profitability few manufacturers of any kind have ever achieved. It was the company's fourth consecutive record quarter.

The AI memory boom

The driver is the AI memory supercycle. Demand for high-bandwidth memory used in Nvidia and AMD AI accelerators has collided with tight supply across both DRAM and NAND flash, pushing prices sharply higher. Samsung, the world's largest memory maker, sits at the center of that collision, and the preliminary results show just how much pricing power the memory industry holds right now.

Every wave of AI data center construction translates into orders for the memory that feeds the accelerators. With cloud providers and AI labs racing to add capacity, memory buyers have had little leverage, and Samsung's margins reflect that imbalance.

Beating the best

The result met or slightly beat most consensus estimates. The Yonhap Infomax survey of analysts had forecast operating profit of 105.4 trillion won, a figure Samsung cleared. Revenue came in a touch below the roughly 200 trillion won consensus, but the profit line, the number investors watch most closely, did the talking.

According to The Elec, the 107.4 trillion won figure exceeds the previous quarterly profit record in big tech, held by Nvidia at $63.7 billion, as well as Apple's marks. Cumulative operating profit for the first nine months of the year reached about 254 trillion won, putting Samsung on pace for a full year that would have been unthinkable just two years ago.

What comes next

These are preliminary figures; Samsung will release its final audited results later, including the divisional breakdown that will show exactly how much of the windfall came from the semiconductor business. Investors will be watching that breakdown closely, along with any commentary on memory pricing going forward.

The open question is how long the supercycle lasts. Memory is famously cyclical, and today's tight supply is tomorrow's capacity expansion. For now, though, Samsung has set a new bar for what a single quarter of big-tech profitability can look like, and the bar is 107.4 trillion won.
